About Us

Welcome to the LLU Blog

The Language Learning Unit (LLU) is the most visible face of internationalisation at Keele University.
Language is inseparable from communication. Sadly, not many of us now learn a language in order to decipher ancient texts. In academic life it is all too easy to overlook how we can apply and practice what we learn outside the university. Academic success is clearly important, but by communicating to others what we have learned, not only in the classroom but through sharing our own experiences in “the real world”, we can also be the voice of internationalisation and even experience a sense of enjoyment in the process.

So, whether you are brushing up on your English for academic study, studying for a qualification to teach English, learning a modern foreign language or just interested in language and communication, we hope that this Blog will provide interesting posts and food for thought.

Jack Hubert writes about his residential summer school stay in Tver , Russia:

My month in Russia was, honestly, one of the most intense and rewarding experiences of my life. Not only did my Russian communication, especially listening, greatly improve but I was also fortunate enough to make a number of great new friends, including several people from Keele that I didn’t know previously. I’m looking forward to seeing them all again once we’re back together at uni.

From thinking and communicating constantly in Russian for such an extended period of time, to eating Russian food every day, to having the opportunity to see and explore different towns and cities within the country, my appreciation and understanding of Russia, her history and her culture has grown exponentially from my month in the country. It’s only possible to learn so much from books and I’m very grateful to Tver State University, Santander, Lera and the LLU for giving me the opportunity to have an experience that I’ll never forget.

Gunma-Keele Partnership Sealed with Second Cohort

The latest cohort of students from one of our newest international partners, Gunma University (Japan), recently completed their 4-week on-site ‘English Language and Culture’ programme jointly organised by the Global Education team and the Language Learning Unit (LLU).
The students (pictured here) enjoyed a taste of campus life, language classes, trips, workplace visits and specialist talks, as well as a 2-week 'homestay' experience, some with Keele families.  The students were treated to a proper Afternoon Tea in Keele Hall with their host families and joined newly-arriving Keele students for the International Ball on the eve of their departure. A blog of their experiences and adventures can be viewed here-- and be sure to have a look at the video they created to introduce Keele to their peers back at Gunma and encourage them to take up the opportunity to expand their skills and horizons.  Many thanks to all Keele staff and families who helped make this a most memorable experience for these students.
